Lost Volume Control

It seems that I have lost the volume control on the taskbar. When I go to
devices and attempt to put it back on, I get a message that the violume
control doesn't exist and I should go to add/remove programs. I do, but
can't find it there. My volume works using a programs control, but I sure
would like it back. Any idea why it left, where it is, and how I can get it
back?

Perfect, EXCEPT . . . the solution you sent me to is obviously the correct
one for my problem. The problem is that it requires the use of the XP disc
and I do not have one. The computer is a SONY which had XP preinstalled.
It did not come with an XP disc. It came with recovery disks, and I assume
the XP program is probably on one of them. However, when inserting the disk
it prompts me to shut off the computer and to have it present at boot up. I
am absolutely sure I do not wish to do a full recovery. So, where can I
find this one file?

Do you have a folder called "i386" on your c drive? For example, "c:\i386".
If you do then type the following in the command prompt. After each command
press ENTER then enter the next command.

c:

cd\

cd i386

expand sndvol32.ex_ %systemroot%\system32\sndvol32.exe

BEAUTIFUL. Worked like a charm. The only thing I had to do diferently than
what you suggested, was to cd to the windows folder before the i386 folder.
Everything else worked as you suggested and I now have the volume control in
the tray and the volume control center. Thanks a million.
