Lost Volume control program

Had some problems about a month ago and have just noticed I no longer have
the volume control icon in my system tray. When I go into Sounds and Audio
Devices Properties and try to check "Place voume icon in the taskbar" I get
"Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar becaure the Volume
Control programs has not been installed. To install it, us Add/Remove. When I
go to Add/Remove Windows components, I cannot find where it is to choose it.

I can still play & listen to things through different media players though!
Thanks for any help!
