Volume Control program not installed.

I noticed that the volume control icon wasn't in the taskbar so I went the
control panel to turn it on and I get an error message stating:

"Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume
Control program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove
Programs in Contro Panel."

How do I reinstall this and how did this happen?

The only thing I can think of was when I was using "Add/Remove Windows
Componests" to remove Windows messenger and MSN explorer. That thing really
confused me because it says you can add/remove programs but when you click
next, all it does is do some kind of configuration. Could someone explain
what this is for and why these programs aren't in the regular "Add or Remmove
Programs" thing. Thanks.

The best answer to your question is because Microsoft chose to do it that
way. IE is not exactly a stand alone program. Microsoft chose to integrate
it into windows in such a way that it cannot be totally removed. As to why
it should interact with the volume control program, I don't know. Volume
control programs in general can get a bit on the weird side. I usually end
up with at least two--The standard windows volume control program, and one
installed with the sound drivers for a specific sound card chip set or card.
Perhaps if you can identify the specific sound card or sound chip set and
drivers, someone can be of more help.

I went to the Device Manager and under "Sound, video and game controllers" it
says "Legacy Audio Drivers" and "Realtek AC'97 Audio." Hope that helps
someone help me. : )

So I'm guessing I can't just download the "Volume Control" program from
microsoft and install it?
Thanks for the help so far.
