Volume Control missing

As long as I can remember, I have had a volume control icon in my taskbar.
I usually have the sound muted and only turn it on for rare special
occasions. A few weeks ago, I noticed that the icon was no longer in the
taskbar. I went to Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, where, on the
Volume tab, I was able to check or uncheck the "Mute" box. That worked
fine, but today I decided to make things more convenient for myself by
checking the box next to "Place volume icon in the taskbar". I got an error
message saying "Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar
because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it,
use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel." I tried using Add/Remove
programs, and chose the "Add/Remove Windows Components" option. Looking
through the options, I can't find anything resembling a "Volume Control
Program". Where would I look for it?
