lost sound after changing device

After I broke my CD drive I lost my sound. I replaced the device with a new
NEC +/- R/RW Double Layer DVD drive (needed to do this because the old CD
drive was unusable even without sound). I thought sound would reappear, but
no such luck!

I checked device manager and everything appears to be working properly. I
also can hear the static when I plug my speakers into the computer, so the
speakers appear to be working. I hope someone can help with this. I can't
wait to use Skype again!

have you checked your sound card?
is it a PCI card or onboard?
have you tried plugging head set or speakers into jack on front of cd drive?

I haven't checked the card (it is onboard) except through looking at the
device manager. Is there another way to do this? And there is not jack on the
front of the drive.. Thanks for your suggestions, though!

You're absolutely sure there is NOT a little black plug in /jack on front of
cd/dvd drive. All I have ever seen do have a jack!!

Is speaker powered up and plug into a "Green" jack on back of computer?
