Sound problem

I have suddenly lost all sound. I can hear a beep coming from p.c. but no
sound from speakers/headphones. I have checked cables & leads. I do not even
get the Windows start up sound. In device manager it says that I do not have
sound installed (even though I always have). Please help. Should I try to
un-install Windows XP?

Open System Information, and look for the sound card entry. You may need to
remove the device driver in Device Manager, and restart to find the driver
again.

start/run, type devmgmt.msc
