Hi, this is my first time posting on this group and I am not a windows
2000 computer expert so please bear with me. I am going to try to
explain this the best way I can without much technical language. I am
a Windows 2000 user and yesterday my computer was having a major
problem. My computer went through the initial BIOS setup and
initialization OK and then during the early stages of the windows
starup, it is abnormally went to a quick blue screen with error
messages that I couldn't even read cause it blinked so fast and then
rebooted the computer. This would go on continuous in a loop.

So, first I tried to go to safe mode and that would result in the same
problem and never reach safe mode. I tried all the other modes in the
advanced startup and the same thing would happen. There was no way I
could get windows 2000 to start-up as it should.

I thought reinstalling windows 2000 was the only choice I had to make
the operating system work again. I am not sure what caused the problem
initially, but I have a feeling that it might have been a virus or
something else. So, I changed my BIOS setting to boot to my CD-ROM
driver and put my windows 2000 CD to start the installation.

I was relieved that the installation procedure went smoothly and I was
able to eventually get windows 2000 to start up normally as it should.
I DID NOT format my hard drive for a totally new install, but did the
upgrade to hopefully make windows work again. So now, here is the BIG
PROBLEM. During the installation process, it seems my old
configuration and settings in the c:\documents and settings\unsername
is no longer used and now I have a new username with a different
registeration. It seems windows did a fresh install on top of all the
other programs that are in my computer. So, now I have the default
windows 2000 startup program menu, nothing in the add/remove programs
control panel, all my emails and setting are not there, the missing
passwords, and so on. I look around at my hard drive and see the old
files that I had and all the programs in the program files folder.

I look in my documents and settings folder and I see the old files and
setting under the username (Webster) and the new one I'm using am
logging on as is (Administrator.WEBSTER). The files under (Webster)
are huge around 8 GB, which means that information is there. In the
system icon in the control panel registered to has changed to name:
Webster, and I think company name: Webster, followed by the
registeration number. This is different from the registration I had
before, which I think was the name: Webster and no company name. The
major problem I have now is that non of the programs and settings that
I had are recognized by windows 2000, which means that I would have to
do a very lengthy reinstall that may cause problems because I might
miss something or not be able to find the installation file or disc
for that program.

I want to know if there is a way to simply retrieve the old setting
back to my current fresh settings safely OR log in as my old username
and registered computer, which I am not able to do. I want to regain
control of the programs and setting that I had before the reinstall of
windows 2000. Thank you for any solutions.

Sounds like you did a clean install on the same partition. You have a couple
of choices. Copy/import the items you need from the now orphaned profile of
the other install and reinstall your applications. If you're going to go
this route then it would be much better to backup your data, wipe the drive
and start a new install.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

The other option is to attempt to repair the other install. From your second
install, run regedt32.exe, then from the Local Machine Hive, choose
Registry|Load Hive, then navigate to the
%windir%\system32\config
directory on the original 03 install, and find the system file, then Open,
in the Key Name box give it some temp name, then under tempname, navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Select
and look in the Reg_Dword value of "Current", this is the current
controlset, then navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet00x\Control\CrashControl
Where x = the value of "Current" (found above) and set the values as follows

"AutoReboot"=dword:00000000
"CrashDumpEnabled"=dword:00000001
"LogEvent"=dword:00000001
"Overwrite"=dword:00000001
Then navigate back up to "tempname" and choose Unload Hive, and boot your
original install, Autoreboot is now turned off so you should be able to read
the stop error.
