Lost Printer

G

Guest

My existing Epson Stylus Colour 580 Printer has stopped responding to print
commands. There is nothing wrong with the printer itself, it works perfectly
from my wife’s PC as always. I tried to reinstall the printer at my ‘Add New
Printers’ page, as it has simply disappeared from there. However, that page
will not allow me to add anything at all. I know that I may have added or
removed something, but System Restore does not work at all.

I have run Norton Systemworks and that does not seem to spot any issues.

I think that you have the right problem, but I am not able to change it: it
is 'stopped', but refuses to allow me to change it. I t denies me access.
It is set to automatic, but then stopped.

You need to have admin rights to start the service. You will need to logon
with admin rights or reboot the machine for the spooler to restart.

Hi there,

I think that I do have the Admin Rights, and have tried to 'start' the print
spooler with no success. I have also tried: Run, net start spooler, with no
success.
I suspect that somehow, I have damaged my registry, and wonder if I can sort
of reinstall Win XP by 'sliding' it under the existing configuration?

The Print Spooler needs the Remote Procedure Call (RpcSs) to be running before the
spooler will start, so be sure that Remote Procedure Call service is on and set to
automatic. If it is, then perhaps your Print Spooler Service has some other
dependency (that it shouldn't). See http://tinyurl.com/bbyqb

I have had a look at the RPCs in Services. One was off and the other was on.
They are now both on.

The Print Spooler says that FAX is dependent upon it.

I have tried to understand the other advice, but it seems to be beyond my
understanding.

The Print Spooler is set to AUTOMATIC, but is then marked as STOPPED. When I
click to start it, I get ERROR 5 ACCESS IS DENIED.

Help!!

To be honest, I had thought that I had the Admin Rights with my usual login,
but I have now also logged in as the Administrator, but with the same results.
The RPCs are both on.
The Print Spooler continues to be stopped, and when I try to turn it on, I
get the same message as I did when using my normal login.
The only dependency showing on either login to the Print Spooler is: Fax.
My old printers page had the printer, the fax, and an Adobe Printer, I think.

Hi there,
In addition to my last email, I have also noted, an all users that the Print
Spooler refers to this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe

However, it is not in that folder at all.

It's a system file. Run system restore (as Administrator, it will not work
otherwise), or use the recovery console to repair the installation. I
never repair so please check at Microsoft.com for instructions.
