Lost Permissions

Hi all
Im running XP SP2 - with no further updates.

I recently noticed I have lost the permissions to access basic
functionality such as monitor settings or many functions in the control
panel. I get the error
"windows cannot access the specified device path or file. You may not
have the appropriate permissions to access this item"
I have attempted to restore but I get faiures under this.
I have run Nortons AV and Spybot with no virus found.

I can access the commands under safe mode in all accounts (Admin and
user) but when I go back to the normal mode I still get the error.

I really dont want to instal again as I have just re done this on a new
system and I have a couple of large apps - but if that is the only fix -
I guess Ill do it

Any suggestions please?

You haven't lost permissions. Permissions apply no matter what mode you are in. At a guess it is security software or a virus. Type Clean boot troubleshooting in help while online.

Further - I followed instructions and it appears that Kerio Personal
Firewall trial version has caused all the problems
It ran out a couple of days ago and said it was running in restricted mode.
Little did i realise restricted mode meant it restricted my access.
The offending driver was Fwdrv.sys - when I removed this Kerio told me it
wasnt working. I de installed and will look for an alternative now

Any suggestions anyone.

It may be that a script was ran when logging on that took her admin rights
away. If this is a company computer these things happen quite regularly.
Talk to your administrator to see if that is the case.
They do this to protect their own investment in preventing users from making
changes to the system and downloading needless stuff.
