lost password

I've switched laptops about a year and half ago.
My old laptop was left sitting around. I tried to boot
it up yesterday and realized all the passwords I know of
do not work. It's quite possible I've just forgotten the
password, any clues out there as to how I can get around
this?!!! Help!
