lost icons on desktop

Can anyone help me? I am running windows XP and all of a sudden for no
reason and I was not having any problems, I started my computer and my
background (wallpaper) will come up but NO ICONS including the start
buttons, etc. The only way I can "semi" get around is to launch task
manager. I cannot rightclick on the desktop to restore it. I had up
to date virus protection and ran a virus scan to rule out any viruses.
Has anyone had this happen? Thanks.

You may have malware, spyware, adware, or all the above fouling things up..

Try this:
Ctrl Alt Del to bring up the Task Manager
Then click File -> New Task -> Type in explorer.exe -> ok
See if anything comes up

interestinly (or more upsetting) about the same time frame I lost all icons
from our desktops on XP. There are two users on the computer and the lost of
icons have only affected one of the users. If anyone has a thought PLEASE
post any and all fixes !!! very frustrating.
