Desktop display

My computer automatically installed Spy Trap which was deemed a threat by my
virus/ spyware protection. I removed it and when I did, I lost my background
image. When I went into display in control panel, the functions under desktop
tab were grey...i.e locked up from use. I ran a new protection
program...SpyDoctor and removed 114 threats. When I did this, I got my
background image back, but the desktop tab functions ( where you can browse
for personal pictures to use as wallpaper) were still locked up. I cannot
figure this out. If I switch users, the display properties works just fine.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I am banging my head against
the wall.

Are you saying that Desktop shortcuts no longer work. Alternatively
are you saying the Taskbar ( bottom left ) or Notification Area
(Bottom right) icon are no longer there or are not working? Can you
access Programs etc off the Start button?

Hope this helps.

Everything on the desktop works. The problem lies in a couple of areas.
Number one is that I cannot change the wallpaper. The desktop tab in display
properties (control panel) is locked from use...i.e. I cannot browse for a
picture or use one that is listed. The second problem that I didn't mention
previously, is that I cannot do a system restore. After I reboot during the
restore process, a window says restoration incomplete. This all happened
after my anti-virus protection removed "pest trap" which is said to hijack
some settings...one being desktop permissions. The computer is acting a
little quirky. Like every now and then the mouse pointer jumps around for a
few seconds...i.e. hard to control.

Log on as the Administrator in Safe Mode and create a new user account
for yourself. Exit and reboot to normal mode. Try changing the wall
paper and test other items. If successfull copy from your old profile
to your new one.

Allow several days to pass and the access the Administrator ib=n Safe
Mode and delete your old profile.
