desktop icons

I am able to click and drag desktop icons but cannot drop
them. Virus scan done with no virus results. Took system
back to restore points with no results in fixing the
problem. Any ideas?

On the desktop, I have some downloaded music files that I
want to put into a specific folder on the desktop. When I
attempt to drag and drop the music file, it won't drop
into the folder. Is that what you mean by a specific eg.?

What happens if, instead of dragging and dropping, you cut and paste?

I am able to cut and paste but my initial concern is that
any desktop icons will not move. I can right click and
use the "arrange icons by" drop down box but am unable to
drop the icons by clicking and dragging them. Any ideas?

Right click on the desktop, select "arrange icons" and then make sure the "auto arrange" choice doesn't have a checkmark next to it.

Thanks anyways...The auto arrange is not checked. Any
other ideas?

just a guess, really. but a mouse is a mechanical object that your computer
responds to via software. if you (click & hold) drag and (release) drop and
the object (assumedly) returns to original position, the desktop settings
would be first guess if not settings then my second guess would be mouse
software (settings or drivers) or hardware... the drop command isn't being
recognised. pop in another mouse or make sure you have the correct software
installed for it or both... can't hurt.

what mouse and what version of software you using?
and while we're at it, what os? and have you done all of your windows and
other hardware driver updates lately?
