lost free space with failed backup

i tried using backup on Win2000/SP4. i have an external 160GB firewire WD
drive. my intent was to backup my 40GB C: drive to the 160. my C: drive only
used about 14GB of the 40GB available.

i started the process and when i checked back later (to my horror!) nothing
had beed put on the 160. instead, the backup aborted after consuming all of
the C: free space except for 13MB! I freed up some space by deleting some
files. the C: still boots and doesn't appear to have any issues.

my question is: how to recover the free space which Backup erroneously
consumed.

thanks for your help.

PS: i have explored the C: with invisible attribute off, and cannot see any
large blocks of files which could account for the missing free space.

My guess is that you accidently configured the backup to backup to the C: drive.
Open a CMD.EXE window and type the following to find it:

dir c:\*.bkf /s /b /a
