Backup failed in Vista Home Premium

I have an HP Pavilion TX1000 new in March. I just acquired a new maxtor 3200
external hard drive, 160 gig. I went to do a backup with the built in Windows
backup tool.

I repeatedly received an error message with the following:

"There is not enough space on your Windows disk to prepare for backing up
your files. At least 400mg of free space is required to continue.
(0x81000014)"

This is extremely puzzling to me, as I have 22 gig of free space on my C
drive, 1.5 gig free in the backup partition, Drive D, and my new external
drive (F) was just formatted with NTFS and showed 150 gig free.

I finally just copied my data to the new F drive, with no problem, but I am
very disappointed in the backup feature.

If i was you, i'd not rely on either System Restore or Windows Backup
native to Vista. From what i've seen and heard, the programs are FAR
too unreliable to be counted on for such an important job that each
performs.

IMO, stick with either Symantec's Ghost 12 or Acronis True Image Home 10
for your backups. If you want my opinion, having perused the forums for
ATI, i'd say stick with Ghost 12. Symantec did a bang up job on Ghost.
Having both programs and seen for myself, that's the route i would take.

BTW, very good idea to backup to an external HD!

Please do not mix up System Restore with a backup program. Backup
shouldn't be thought of as an alternative to System Restore. They are
two different things, with very different purposes. System Restore is
meant to be a quick easy way to revert your system (not your data) to
the state it was in a day or a few days ago. Effectively it's just an
easy way to undo a recent change you made, and it's a very useful
program for that purpose.

Backups are still needed, if you value your data.
