lost file

I tried to call up a file that I had previously worked on. I saw it listed,
hit the file name, and got a browse button. I hit the browse button and the
file disappeared. I can't locate it again. I used to be able to hit an icon
on the left side of the screen called history. But I can't find that icon
either.

Can someone tell me how to find the file?

Thanks. The question: how do I do that. I need a step by step guide the first
time I do something new. Even the second time.
