Lost ethernet connection

Bill

On or about the night of 7/14/09, when I went to log off my PC I had a
message that I needed to restart for an update. I shut down my PC and the
next day when I went to get back on the internet I found that I lost my
Ethernet connection on my modem. Upon checking I found that I had also lost
my indicating lights on my LAN socket. Verizon checked out their end and all
checked good. Hooked up my old PC and all was fine. Looked at my network
connections and had the big red X saying network connection unplugged, it
wasn't. Went thru device manager net adapters showed no problems, deleted and
reinstalled, no change. Had a PC tech check it out $ and no change. Who would
have thought... He suggested getting a new modem and hooking up thru a DSL
port but don't have many left. And my graphics card takes up to many slots to
get a good PCI slot. Tried a Gigbyte net adapter no luck software couldn't
see card in the only PCI slot I have left. Everything installed fine when I
tried it on my old PC. Yes my disc drive is fine, checked that too. Sure hope
you guys can help. thanks much Bill

if there was an update
applied,

then you can undue it
by booting into safemode

and initiating a system
restore point to a functional
date before the update(s)
were applied.

to boot into safe mode:

when you reboot, hold
down the f8 key to engage
the special boot menu.

*** It is very unlikely that there is a correlation between the
*** automatic update and the failure you observe. Most likely
*** it would have happened anyway.
Upon checking I found that I had also lost
my indicating lights on my LAN socket. Verizon checked out their end and
all
checked good. Hooked up my old PC and all was fine.
*** Hooked up your old PC to what? Your modem?
*** Your other PC?
Looked at my network
connections and had the big red X saying network connection unplugged, it
wasn't. Went thru device manager net adapters showed no problems, deleted
and
reinstalled, no change. Had a PC tech check it out $ and no change.
*** What exactly did the PC tech check?
Who would have thought...
He suggested getting a new modem and hooking up thru a DSL
port but don't have many left.
*** Are you talking about the network ports on your
*** ADSL modem? How many do you have? Have
*** you tried all of them?
And my graphics card takes up to many slots to
get a good PCI slot.
*** How many PCI slots does your graphics adapter
*** require? If more than one, how can this be? And
*** what do you mean with "a good PCI slot"? Do
*** you have some bad ones? Do you have a flakey
*** motherboard?
Tried a Gigbyte net adapter no luck software couldn't
see card in the only PCI slot I have left.
*** What adapters do you have in the other PCI slots?
Everything installed fine when I tried it on my old PC.
*** Have you tried moving your network adapter
*** from the old to the new PC?
Yes my disc drive is fine, checked that too. Sure hope

Going by your description I suspect that you have a problem with your PCI
controller. If so then you would either need a new motherboard or a USB to
LAN adapter.

@@@ that's what i was trying to find out....
*** Hooked up your old PC to what? Your modem?
*** Your other PC?
@@@ I hooked up my old PC to the modem and had a connection to the internet.
*** What exactly did the PC tech check?
@@@ net adapters is all I know of, I'm not much of a computer person...
*** Are you talking about the network ports on your
*** ADSL modem? How many do you have? Have
*** you tried all of them?
@@@ I have an old modem Westell 2200, he suggested getting a new modem so I could also run two PC's on the internet(one for the girl friend). As well as using a DSL connection between the modem and my "newer" PC and an ethernet connection for my old PC.
*** How many PCI slots does your graphics adapter
*** require? If more than one, how can this be? And
*** what do you mean with "a good PCI slot"? Do
*** you have some bad ones? Do you have a flakey
*** motherboard?
@@@ PC has 2 PCI slots and 1 PCIS slot for the graphics card; graphics card is a EVGA 260GT (big card) it is 2 slots thick leaving only 1 PCI slot open. Which the Gigbyte net adapter software did not see....
*** What adapters do you have in the other PCI slots?
@@@ Gigbyte net adapter is still in the only open PCI slot I had open...
*** Have you tried moving your network adapter
*** from the old to the new PC?
@@@ Both PC's have net adapters on the mother board...Tried the Gigbyte net adapter in both PC's; worked fine on my old PC but would not on my new PC...Software would not load ...

Going by your description I suspect that you have a problem with your PCI
controller. If so then you would either need a new motherboard or a USB to
LAN adapter.

@@@ Thanks for the help......

If your Gigabyte network adapter works in your old PC then the adapter and
the driver you use are fine. If the same adapter is not detected in the
newer PC then the suspicion is on the PCI slot in the new PC. Did you try a
hardware reporting program such as Aida32
(http://www.aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php#aida32)? If you're still
unsuccessful, have the machined checked by a qualified PC repair service.

You say you don't know what the technician did. Did you pay him any money?
If yes, why? A reputable technician will not charge you unless he can fix
the problem or report exactly what's wrong and what needs to be done,
preferably in writing.

You also say that the technician suggested you need a new modem so that you
can connect two PCs to the Internet. This is incorrect - it would be much
cheaper to buy a 4-port network switch. Use one port for your own PC,
another for your friend's PC and the third to connect to the modem.

Pegasus [MVP] ; sorry I got kinda screwed up on my computer terms... Said DSL
when I should have said USB.... made corrections below. I do believe the
problem is with the mother board, lost LAN connection; PCI slot not working.
The PC is covered under warranty so I'll more than likely send it back for
repairs. But fiirst I will try the Aida32 hardware reporting program that you
posted below. Any other suggestions you may have are are more than welcome.
Again; thank you so much for your help and time......Bill
