After I installed WinXP SP2, the computer could not detect my Modem and
Ethernet card installed at PCI slots. I tried the cards on other machine and
they are good. I tried to install these two cards by using adding hardware
manually. The two cards were installed. However, the modem was not usable and
the network card could not be started (code 10). Since I do not have any
internet connection on that machine, I can not run windows update. But before
that, my windows was updated timely. Would you please give me some
suggestions?

Try updating the drivers for those devices. Get drivers from the mftrs.'
websites, not from Windows Update. Obviously you will have to download
the drivers on a machine with a working Internet connection and burn
them to a cd-r.
