Installing modem.

I just put a modem into my computer, and when I started my computer
windows update downloaded an update called "Microsoft Corporation -
Modems - Lucent Win Modem", so naturally I assumed that if I restarted
the comp after the updates installed, that it would detect my modem.
Well, it never asked to install any modem, and when I enter the device
manager and scan for hardware changes the modem does not show up. Can
someone help me? Is there a way to make windows detect the card(it is in
a PCI slot)? I have DSL but the connection right now is terrible, and it
keeps dropping because of outages in my area. Is there anything else I
can do?

Maybe go into your bios and make sure you have your com ports enabled.

Never use those "generic" MS drivers for anything use the ones supplied
by the maufacture, that said, start in safe mode and go back into
DM,select show hidden devices.
If you see a reference to the modem get rid of it, turn off the machine
and put the modem into a different PCI slot [make sure you remove the
power cable before opening the housing]. Restart and cancel out of
installing when XP finds the new hardware, then run the installation
routine from the driver CD that came with the modem.

yeh, you can try to roll back the modem driver and select a generic one from
the list, like a plain rgular 56k modem driver frm the list. be sure that in
addition to identifing your modem device tht there is also a corresponding
com port device showing up as well and dedicated to the modem.... but you
might also have a little problem with the signal if your dsl is always having
trouble tooo.
