If someone can give my son (28) and I (a little older) some guidance it
would be greatly appreciated. I spent all day (and half the night)
yesterday searching Google to try to find an answer or something to try to
fix the problem.
Symptom: Lost all web page access through cable and dial-up. Turned off
PC. When restarted a day later no web page access.
My son has a Dell PC 3 months old. Cox cable, working for 2 months. WinXP
Pro with all updates. Last updates more than two weeks ago. Cox tech can
access the net through the cable connection. Attempted "repair" to
reestablish IP lease but an error message says "Failed to establish IP
address". Added another NIC card, still can not acquire IP address.
Dialed (modem) into Earthlink and made modem connection but IE still says
"page can not be displayed". That used to work too. Turned off McAfee
Firewall. Ran Virus Scan and Spybot. Nothing was found. Although "System
Restore" was not turned off there were no restore points.
My son tells me the last thing he was doing before he shut down was
re-mixing some music CDs from other CDs. He does not download music from
the web. He had previously checked web email so he knows it was working.
Unlike all the messages I found, this is a stand alone PC. No router, no
other PC internet sharing.
Cable tech says re-load the machine.... (Oh my God!)
I don't know what else to report... or look for. Please!!! can someone
help?
