While attempting to eliminate the logon screen and the
welcome screen, I must have made a mistake. My personal
account has disappeared, and I do not have access to my
files. Help Please!

For XP Pro: Press CTRL-ALT-DEL twice at the Welcome Screen, with no users logged in. Enter Administrator, and any password that you may have put on this account at setup. You should now be able to access the User Accounts applet. If you didn't delete the files for your user account, you can use the Administrator account to 'Take Ownership' of your old files.

See Help and Support and search for "take ownership"

For XP Home, you must boot the computer into Safe Mode to access the built in Administrator account. It will appear on the Welcome Screen.
