Loss of internet explorer functionality

G

Guest

I have lost a number of functions in internet explorer.
I have no toolbars except the address bar and have no access to the File
Tools etc menus.
Download function has stopped. I cant click on a link that starts a
download. Nothing happens. So I cant even go to another web browser site and
download their software.
Also no detail is coming up in the taskbar for any open internet explorer
pages. Just a blank box.
System restore wont go back to the day before the troulble started.
I cant seem to remove iexplorer even with the instalation disk so I can
reinstall.
Safe mode makes no difference.
Can someone please help me?

First click F11 to bring up the Toolbar, then perform these steps:

1= Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced .

Click on General Tab (1st Tab on the left) and you will see a Button called
[ Clear History ..] click on it to clear your History caches, then click on
[Delete Files..] to delete Internet Files created over the time, click on [
Delete Cookies...] to delete your cookies left by visiting websites.

= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
the None/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you need to Renable them one-by-one
later and see which one is the culprit and remove it or you can send them
here in your next
post) and click [OK] to confirm your Changes.

Click on Advanced Tab and scroll down under the browsing option and uncheck
this box:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) and click Apply
then OK to close your IE Properties.

Scan for malwares from here:
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
http://www.safer-networking.org ; for Spybot S&D

2= Open a run command and type in:
ipconfig /flushdns click [OK]
ipconfig /renew click [OK]
regsvr32 urlmon.dll click [OK]
Reboot your machine and try to connect.
Also you may have a corrupted winsock so try to repair it, you can do it in
two ways:
Manually by opening a Run command and type in:
netsh winsock reset click [OK]

Reboot your machine.
Or by downloading this tool called winsock fixer from here:
http://www.nasstec.co.uk/tools.html

Also advisable to run Disk CleanUp on your Hard drive.

Thanks for such a comprhensive response unfortunately there are a number of
problems with the suggestions you have offered. (All of which would most
probably have worked under normal conditions)

They are:
F11 does not do anything for my toolbar problems except autohiding the only
existing one (address bar). Right click does not work on it by the way.

Something is stopping me from opening the IE properties. As well as the
method you suggest, right clicking IE from the desktop and selecting
properties does not open it either.

Your suggestion of downloading the malwares and winsock fixer cant be done
because that is one of the major problems (ie. cant download).

Thanks again for your comprehensive and obviously expert response.

Any other options?

You are a patient person. Thankyou.

I should have explained better what I had tried and where it went wrong.
When I click Start>>Control Panel.......... all is normal until where there
used to be the Internet Options there is now an icon of the earth with 2
ticks in front of it and no name that yields no response when clicked.
Nothing. Doesn't work. Cant get the Internet properties up to do all that you
suggested.

As for the rest of the suggestions I am off to do the dll files now.

I had a copy of the lavasoft on my system already that I have run.

The others I am still unable to download

Oh yeah right click doesnt work so i cant copy and paste. (Ctrl c and Ctrl v
not functioning either). These functions are fine in other aplications just
not IE

Well try the Disk clean Up and Run Lavasoft in Both Safe Mode and Normal Mode
in Full Scan not Quick scan.
Then Open the Run Command and type this command:
sfc /scannow click [Ok] and leave it to run, get your XP CD handy to
insert it in if you prompted by the system to do so.
It is late here in the UK, so if you didn't get response from other Helpers
then Tomorrow.
Good Luck.

I have lost a number of functions in internet explorer.
I have no toolbars except the address bar and have no access to the File

Download function has stopped. I cant click on a link that starts a

download their software.
Also no detail is coming up in the taskbar for any open internet explorer

Scan for malwares from here:

Well, Try system Restore to an earlier date before this issue happened.
Also it is likely an Infection by a Virus on your computer, you need to run
a thorough scan in Both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.
Tom perform the System Restore do the following:
Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> System Restore.
On the System Restore follow the wizard and select a date from the calender

Another is to try to See which process is taking the CPU usage by doing this:
Press ALT+ CTRL+DEL , see how many running processes is running in the
background and the usage.
Also you can download the Processor Explorer and see the bad one and post
back:

= If all fail download the Hijackthis and send the report to one of many
forums for analysis and troubleshooting:
When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
