Internet Explorer will not connect

I see several threads with an internet problem but none that sound like mine.
So here goes:

I click on the IExplorer icon and sometimes the explorer window will appear,
indicate 'connecting', status bar at the bottom empty, never connect.
Sometimes the window does not appear at all but will be in the 'processes'
list. Same result with Netscape and Firefox except that Netscape and
Firefox never appear as a window on the desktop, just in 'processes'.

Google Chrome will work. Used it to try and download explorer 8 but have
been unsuccessful in installing it.

Any clues?

Thanks,

Don
