Losing internet connection

My Internet connection gets "lost" 20-30+ times a day.

A red "X" appears on the Earthlink icon (in the system tray).
Clicking on the Earthlink icon displays a box containing a number of
entries. Clicking "Get Connected" restores the connection to the
Internet.

How can I determine why the connection gets lost? Is there a "log"
that I can look at?

Usually, the lack of activity between the computer and the ISP is
enough to "time out" the connection, resulting in the disconnect.
The interval could be pre-set by the ISP's administration or it can
also depend on the demand for internet service at the ISP. If one
wants more regularity with a connection, then there are various types
of connect services, ranging from dial-up to direct, dedicaed fibre-
optics. It's just a matter of buying the right service.

If it's Cable or DSL line noise may be the culprit. Call your ISP and have
them do some tests.

you can check your event log with admin tools and event viewer.
is this a DSL or dial up connection?

what kind of firewall do you use? software or hardware or combo?
check your cpu Performance
