Network Icon Displays Red X

I have Vista Ultimate, and in my system tray the network (LAN
connection) icon displays with a red X over it. The error
message reads:
connection status: unknown
server execution failed

I know that the red X normally means there is no connection, I am
certain I do have an internet connection because you are reading
this post.

Would someone be so kind as to help me get rid of the red X, or
point me in the right direction so that I can do it myself? I
tried searching the MS Knowledge Base, but was confused by all
the results.

Thank you,

It may be referring to another type of connection present on your machine,
e.g. Firewire 1394..

Go into Control Panel > Network and Sharing Centre > Manage Network
Connections..

Look for the connection being used, and right click on others to select
disable..

For whatever it is worth I have the same "red X" issue for network and there
are no other connections as this is a wired desktop with one RJ45 connector
which is in use and functioning as the OP stated because you are reading
this email.

Bottom-posting ...
It may be referring to another type of connection present on

The only internet connections on my machine are the wired
connection, which I use when I'm at my desk; and the wireless
connection, which I use when I'm using my computer somewhere else
in the house and has been disabled.
Go into Control Panel > Network and Sharing Centre > Manage
Network Connections.. Look for the connection being used, and
right click on others
to select disable..

I did both of those. As stated above, I disabled my wireless
connection instead of just turning it off. I did a warm boot,
connected to the internet using my wired connection, and that
darn red X is still sitting on top of my network (wired
connection) icon. What is the next step?
