If it's working for you then perhaps it's because I have an extension
that that opens a new tab when I click my middle mouse button.

That's the default behaviour for Firefkx too, but only when you click on a
link.

If you click on the page somewhere that is _not_ a link, you get the
autoscroll behaviour a la IE.
