Looking for a freeware streaming media capture software

I have spent more than several hours in search of a utility that will
allow me to capture streaming video for the Windows Media Player.

The types of media files are generally .asf

I have found several programs that are sold, but my need is only
"seldom" and I really don't want to pay for a program that I may use
only once or twice a year.

I have tried SDP Downloader 2.0 and Hi Net Recorder. I cannot figure
out how to get either of them to work.

Any suggestions?

WM encoder 9 series from microsoft does just that......Download the encoder
& its utilities,also,once video is captured by the encoder,you can also run
it
thru again (convert) & clean it up if desired..............
