long start up

Sometimes I notice that it takes 5-10 minutes for my system
to complete start up. I cannot seem to find the culprit.
Can anyone suggest methods for troubleshooting?

* Check the event logs for errors
* If the machine is connected to network, check that DNS is
properly setup.
* Disable unused services.
