LONG delay when saving a shortcut with IE

D

_DD

What is the cause of the long delay in saving an IE shortcut? This
happens only after a few IE windows are open, or when at least one IE
window is open for a length of time. For that reason, I suspect a
problem with some local 'resource' that is getting depleted. This
occurs on systems with lots of ram, so it's not directly related to
main memory allocation.

Closing -ALL- IE windows seems to fix this, so there's some base that
stays alive for all IE windows. (Any way to change this?)

I'd post some system configs, but I've seen this on several systems
now, and it seems to occur independent of hardware. Again, it seems
more related to the length of time that at least one IE window is
open.

Ideas?

On most machines, IE 6.0.2900.2180. Not sure if I've loaded IE 7 on
anything yet (I'll have to check). I am cautious about moving to new
versions of anything if I'm doing OK with current versions. Does IE 7
fix a known problem with this?

Not that I know of and that's not why I asked anyway.

Are you referring to adding a bookmark to your Favorites, DD, or creating &
saving a literal (webpage) shortcut to, e.g., the desktop?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

I was talking about saving bookmarks to Favorites. It's kind of a
binary thing in that normally they save very quickly, but after
multiple IE windows have been open for a while, there is a sudden
dramatic slowdown. Both IE and the file system lock while something is
going on in the background with the bookmark save. Once the problem
starts, it does not stop until -all- IE windows are closed.

This has happened on a lot of machines, with and without anti-virus,
etc. I just noticed it on a new machine w no anti-virus or 3rd party
firewall running on it yet. I have usually used NOD32, but I doubt
that this is related to anything except IE or some file system quirk.

1. Change your "Days to save History" setting to no more than five (5) days,
if set higher (e.g., 365 days).

2a. If a Norton application had been installed at some point but is now
uninstalled, download/run this removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

2b. If a McAfee application had been installed at some point but is now
uninstalled, download/run this removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105&partner=McAfee&type=TS&ia=1

3. Uninstall any/all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google; Yahoo; MSN; Windows
Live; Skype; Roboform) via Add/Remove Programs.

4. Disable any unnecessary Add-ons remaining via IE Tools | Manage Add-ons.

5. Delete Temporary Internet Files via IE Tools | Internet Options | General
| Temporary Internet Files, accepting the option to delete all offline
content.

6. Run Disk Cleanup.

7.Run Disk Defragmenter.

8. Test the behavior now. If and when you experience the same behavior,
tell me how many IE windows were open at the time.

Hi PA Bear,

Days to save was already set at 6. I've decreased it to 4.
No Norton, No McAfee (I avoid both)
The only addons are Adobe pdf reader and Google Toolbar
(Is Google Toolbar a known problem? I actually use that)
I keep the Temp Internet Files quota low.
Last occurrence was on a newly loaded system, though I have run
defraggers on others with no change in behavior.

I often have 10 IE's running. I suspect that this problem occurs
somewhere in the code that they share (given that all IE's have to be
closed to correct it).

Please do #3 through #8, DD. (Yes, that means uninstalling Google Toolbar,
at least for now.)

Hi again, PA Bear.

Did all the steps above and still the same problem. It sometimes takes
10 seconds for the hourglass to go away when saving a 'favorite' link.

I didn't think that any of the above would change anything, as this
has occurred on systems with various combinations of configs, and with
newly loaded systems.

Is there any way to cache the favorites folder entries and let them
save in the background?

I'll keep GoogleToolbar etc unloaded til I hear back.

I have nothing left to suggest, DD. What your seeing is quite unusual
behavior IMHO but I have no idea what's causing it.
