Logon Login trouble with Win XP

I use Win XP Pro on 3 seperate computers.

I did something really stupid yesterday... In trying to get rid of the
annoying logon screen that appears everytime I start 2 of my computers, I
looked online for a solution and found what I thought would work...

I went to Start, Run, control userpasswords2, and unchecked the box that
says Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer. After
clicking on Apply, another box comes up asking for a password. I typed an
easy one for me to remember. Now, today, I cannot get to my desktop. Windows
will not allow me past the Logon screen.

I know this is a touchy subject, for security reasons. But I never setup my
system to use login screens in the first place. They just appeared one day.
It is annoying for me to have this step, so I want to get rid of it... I want
to turn my system ON and then walk away till it finishes starting up.

Can anyone help me get back to my desktop, with my settings, my Outlook
accounts, and my favorites? I am in a desperate situation in
a small business.

Thanks for any response.
Clint

P.S. I followed the Ctrl, Alt, Del at the welcome screen and got into a
completely new desktop. But I need MY desktop really bad!

I don't understand This part:
P.S. I followed the Ctrl, Alt, Del at the welcome screen and got into a
completely new desktop. But I need MY desktop really bad!

but, if you mean the logon box said "Administrator" - go back in there,
repeat the "control userpasswords2' sequence, and when the password popup
arrives, blank out the current password (if any) and press "Enter" key WITH
IT BLANK. Apply/OK if necessary.
REBOOT. When the logon box comes up, put in YOUR Username to replace the
user "Administrator". Do not put a password in the box, just press Enter key.
After your desktop comes up, go to user accounts. "Change the way users
log on or off" takes you to an option screen. It sounds wrong, but check Use
the Welcome Screen (box) and Use Fast-User Switching (box). Apply; ok. Reboot.
Otherwise, boot into Safe Mode, do Admin part from there, reboot, follow
above from reboot.
Worked in XP Home (after some Windows Update was installed on my 'puter).

Excellent!
Thank you...it took a joint effort by you and others to get me back to my
desktop on both computers.
My original problem was compounded by the fact that I could not even
remember the username for myself, on each computer. I never needed to know
that before today. When the logon box started to appear some time back, I
quickly learned that I could just hit Enter and go on in...But my "fixing" on
yesterday just took that option away from me...
In the end, it took a download from www.dougknox.com , in order for me to
get control of the welcome screen and fast user switching. Some recent
software addtitions took that control away from me...some RtlGina2.dll file
or something...
Anyway,
Thanks for your kind attention on this day.

Kelly,
I appreciate your attention to my problem on this day... I fixed it...with
the help of several postings...
I have gotten help from you several times in the past.
Just to let you know though, I would not know how to boot my computer into
safe mode without instructions.
Thank you, Clint
