Logon issue

Hi Al
I have a W2K machine in a domain environment. Each time I log on to this machine, either to the domain or to the machine itself with valid userid and password, the machine attempts a logon, and then logs off immediately, without going into the desktop. Neither the the local Admin id or a valid Doamin id allows a logon. Any idea, I have never seen this before
Thank
Buck

- Use psexec.exe (www.sysinternals.com) to check the permission structure of
c:\winnt\system32\userinit.exe. It's supposed to be universally accessible.
- Check the registry of that remote machine and look at this key:
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Current Version/Winlogon/Userinit. Does
it point at the correct location?

There can be a number of causes. If it happens to just one user then it is
usually a corrupt user profile, but that is not your case. See the link below
for one reason and the others are usually insufficient permissions to load user
profile or system files, or failure of critical services to start due to file
corruption, program incompatibilities, etc. It could also be caused by a virus.
Try to connect to it via Computer Management/Event Viewer and look in the
application/system logs for any clues. Also try booting into safe mode and use
last known good configuration. Success in safe mode would indicate a conflict
with a startup program/service/driver that can be resolved with a copy of
msconfig from an XP box or downloaded via a Google search location. Other
options to repair would be repair install using fast repair or upgrade
installation. -- Steve
