Login screen appears if my laptop is unattended

I have WinXP Home, SP2.

If I leave my laptop unattended for 5 minutes, the user login screen appears.

How can I lengthen, or disable, the time that must elapse before the login
screen appears when my laptop is unattended?

What you are describing is the Screen Saver when it is On and you moving
your Mouse to activate the Desktop you get the Welcome screen because it
configured to come on from Standby /screen saver.
Try this:
Right click on the desktop then select Properties from the drop down list.
On the Display properties click on Screen Saver Tab and make sure these
settings are correct or change them:

Wait: [ 10 ][v] Minutes [ ] On Resume display Welcome screen <= uncheck
this check box.
Click [OK] and Reboot your computer and see if it will happen again.
If it did then try to check your Power options through the control panel >>
Power Options.
HTH.
