frozen during login screen?

My winXP SP2 when booted and unattended for a few minutes, stop responding
at the login screen where user accounts icons are displayed. Clicking on the
icon does not produce a password box. In fact, clicking on anything does not
have response (not even shutdown). Alt-ctrl-del also doesn't do anything.
The only solution is to turn off the power and reboot and not wait too long
to login.

Other than this, once I logged in, there is no problem.

Any ideas?

run from a boot to CD and Recovery Console (press 'r' for Repair), the
command: (cd drive letter here):/i386/expand.exe (cd drive letter
here):/i386/winlogon.ex_ %windir%/system32/winlogon.exe

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your posting here.

The problem can occur if there is some third-party software that are not
loaded properly. I would like to recommend that you run msconfig.exe to
disable Startup Group and Third party services on the Windows XP computer.
What is the result?

You can refer to the following document for more information:

How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP

Have a nice day!
