Login returns to welcome screen

When I have been off the machine for some time and it has gone to the
screen saver and then I hit enter and it goes to the welcome screen I
login and every single time I do it the system comes to the logged in
state for a fraction of a second and them returns to the welcome
screen. A VERY annoying but not a critical -problem. The next login
works correctly.
Why would this be and is there a solution?

There could be two reasons.

Start, Control Panel, Power Settings, Advanced Tab, checkbox for " prompt
for...."

or:

The screen saver has a setting to 'ask for password.'
