Login Problem with Domain Issue when no Domain Involved.

I recently restarted my personal computer and received the disk consistency
check error message, so I let it do its thing. After the restart, I was
unable to login with my normal userid or the administrator account or any
other account. I receive the error message "The system cannot log you on now
because the domain melvin is not available." Melvin is the name of the
computer. I am using Windows XP SP2 and I have never connected it to a
domain and no domain has even been involved. I have rechecked the drive and
it finds no errors. The same error occurs when I boot in safe mode. I cannot
get past the login screen when I boot from the hard drive. I can access the
drive fine when I boot with Windows PE but I don't know what to do to fix
the problem. Any ideas on how to resolve this?
