logging into windows xp

I have encountered a login condition I haven't seen before. Rather than the
normal windows login screen enabling one to choose a user id and keying the
password, I am getting a dialogue box requesting the user id and the
accompanying password.

I am unable to locate the list of id's and associatede passwords, but if I
can get to the usual windows login screen the id's will be present and the
questions to prompt my memory to obtain my password will enable me to
successfully login.

Does anyone know how to bypass this dialogue box? there is no way to "x"
out of the dialogue screen.

The first thing you should do is see if you can log on with the
built-in Administrator account. How you log on with the
Administrator account depends on what version of XP you have
installed on your computer.

XP Home Edition

To logon with the built-in Administrator account in XP Home
Edition you have to restart the computer and boot into Safe
Mode.
To start in Safe Mode, reboot your computer and
start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything displayed
on the screen.
Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Startup
Options menu appears.
Use the up and down arrow keys on your
keyboard to select Safe Mode.
Hit Enter.
Enter Administrator in the User name box.
Unless you changed it, the password should be blank.

XP Professional
In the Log On to Windows dialog, enter Administrator in the
User name box.
If you set up a password for this account, enter it now.
Otherwise, leave the password box blank.

If you're still locked out of your computer, there are a number
of bootable CD's available on the net which can be used to
reset a password. Here are a couple of examples.

Offline NT Password & Registry Editor

Ultimate Boot CD for Windows®

Once you've been able to logon with an administrative account,
do the following.

Go to Control Panel and double click User Accounts.
Click on Change the way users log on or off.
Put a check mark in the box next to "Use the Welcome screen".
You can also check "Use Fast User Switching" if you want.
Hit the Apply Options button.
Log off to see if the Welcome Screen is displayed.

Good luck

If I understand your issue correctly, then do this: Go to Start > Run > Type
this: control userpasswords2 > press Enter > go to Advanced tab > Uncheck
option at bottom. As long as your computer is not on a Windows domain, this
should work.

Sounds like you are asking about the Fisher-Price fluff login screen
where it shows pretty icons for each account, you click, and then you
enter the password. The first thing I do after installing Windows XP
is get rid of the Fisher-Price login screen (along with Fast User
Switching). It sounds like you are using the standard login screen
where it asks for both username and password.

Have you tried to hunt through the User Accounts applet in Control
Panel looking for "change the way users log on or off"? As I recall,
the fluff Welcome Screen is not available when logging onto a domain.
Join a domain recently?
