Windows login troubles. PLEASE HELP

T

Tom Wells

I really need some help. Right now I can't access my computer at all. When
it boots instead of the usual quick login screen which lists the users I get
a general windows logon dialogue box. If I enter one of the active usernames
and passwords it logs into windows properly, but only for a couple of
seconds and then it loops back to the same login screen. Safe mode doesn't
seem to help. I have windows xp sp2. Please help me. Thanks. Tom

Hi Tom

Can you access Windows via the Administrator Account, or do you have the
same problem? Have you tried 'Last Known Good Configuration' - from the
same screen as access to Safe Mode?

Have you recently removed spyware? If so see if this link helps:

Hi Will,

Thanks for your prompt reply. I have tried the last known good configuration
option and it results in the same problem. I tried to use the adminstrator
account, but, since I use it so rarely I can't remember the password. A
couple of additional observations which may or may not be related. Often
when I reboot my keyboard isn't recognized. Also when I go to safe mode it
says Windows Home edition. A year or so ago I installed windows xp
professional. Tom

More symptoms. If I try to enter the recovery console by booting from the
Windows cdrom I can only get so far and then I get an error message that
says that it failed to find the hard drive. What now? Tom

Did you change the BIOS so that looks to the CD drive first on booting?
Is the hard drive recognized in the BIOS? Reboot and go into the BIOS
to see. Open the case and make sure all the cabling to the drive is
connected properly. Download a drive diagnostic utility from the drive
manufacturer's web site. That will create a bootable floppy or CD.
Boot from that and run the diagnostics.

The "Administrator" account password is usually left balnk (ie no password).

have you tried to boot from a Win XP floppy disk??

The two KB articles requires the use of a networked machine to gain access
to the registry. You could also perform the registry edits via BartPE
bootable CD. Or you can *slave* the hard drive to another working XP machine
to make the registry edits. If you need help on doing this please let me
know.

Visit http://www.winxptutor.com/wsaremove.htm and see section "Unable to
logon to Windows after removing BlazeFind using a spyware removal utility?"

Incorrect Userinit value in the registry is known to be the cause:

I want to thank everyone for their help in solving my login problems. Using
a combination of everyone's help I managed to solve the problem.
Unfortunately, I eventually had to reistall Windows, but, at least I didn't
have to format my hard drive. Anyway thanks. Tom

Tom and others,

I am new to newsgroup usage so please bear with me.
I have a simillar problem to Tom's here.

My issue is that after one or more successful remote desktop sessions
(dosen't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to when) on subsuquent attempts
after entering username & password the desktop looks like it is logingin then
just disappears. When attempting to login at the console of the computer the
login process seems to begin then just returns to the login prompt.

Does anyone have any information about this type of problem?
Some additional background on our situation;
Workgroup (Domain in work but not online yet).
Once this problem starts no user, including Administrator, can login.
Restarting the computer clears the problem (at least until it occurs again).
And the security event log shows a successful logon but none of the logon
scripts which run via secondary login service and normally create a logon
event themselves start.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Krompton

I can not login to my computer. It won't load safe mode. It tells me disk
boot error. I went into bios and it does not auto recognize or manually allow
me to set the hd settings. When I did try booting with the system cd for
windows xp, it asked me for the admin password, so I entered the only
password I ever used to login to windows and it said it was invalid after
three attempts and had me restart the whole process again.

I am hoping I can get this resolved before I have to refomat the drive, as I
have many pictures, graphics and other documents I would hate to lose. I am
desperate for help!

Any advice is greatly appreciated. The sooner the better, as I have work to
complete tonight!

Thank you!

It's best not to post a new problem as a reply in a thread. Next time
start a new thread with your issue. That it's not recognized in the
BIOS is not good, could be the drive died. Slave the drive in another
XP or Win2k computer and see if it's recognized. If so copy off the
essential data. Never ever be without a current, full and complete backup.

If the drive isn't detected in the other computer then the drive died.
If that's the case, depending on how valuable the data is, you could
send it in to a data recovery service like www.driversavers.com or
www.ontrack.com. Know that their services are very expensive and no
guarantees.

Got the same problem with Krompton and Tom here, and twice fresh installation
of windows XP Logon Console prompts for User and password. No user passwords
setup during installation prompted nor Administrator with blank password
works nor in safe mode. SInce this happens immediately upon an installation
upgrade, another installation may not solve the problem. (Previous OS does
not prompt password to login)

Any help or explain why is this happening ?

Thanks
