I did'nt want to bother our IT guys at work cause we've got major problems
here at work right now.
My computer at home has Windows XP on it. We just got DSL out in our area so
I was trying to set the system up where someone has to Login with a password
so that my 13 year old daughter would not have easy access to the internet
during the day. You know with DSL, all you have to do is click on the
Internet Explorer and you're connected just like that. You don't have to give
a password like I did with dial-up. Well, I went into User Accounts and set
it up to where when the computer comes on, the box comes up asking for the
user name and password. Well, I have forgotten my password!!! Dumb me!! It
used to be set-up to where the Welcome Screen would come on and the member
of the family would click on their name to bring up their desktop. My
computer
is a Compaq Presario 5852 that we bought in 2000. Ancient I know!!! I no
longer have tech support for the puter and I doubt that I could get tech
support from Microsoft. I have tried to start in Safe Mode to see if there
was an option to get me in but I did'nt see anything that pertained to my
problem. WHAT CAN I DO TO SOLVE IT SO I CAN GET BACK INTO MY COMPUTER???
HELP!!!!!
Thanks.

I also have a similar problem. Let me guess, you forgot the password to the
administrator account, right? I'm hoping, praying there's some sort of
override password, because everything I have for work is on there!!! But if
it helps you, I do know that if there is an admin account you CAN get into,
there are multiple ways (system restore as well as change password) to go
about to get back in. I sadly, am stuck.

By default, the XP Home Administrator account password is usually blank -
just press enter . You must be in Safe Mode to get to this.

Once you're in the Admin account, simply go to Control Panel, Users, and
reset the passwords for your account.

If you have truly lost the Admin password, all is not lost; there are a
number of bootable CDs you can make that will remove the passwords. Most
of these are based on Linux. Of course, you'll need to make these on
another system.

I've personally used the Astrumi CD for this purpose. Be sure you are
clear on the instructions, because it isn't a beginner's tool.

Please note that if you are using XP Pro, and encrypted anything, you must
not use these disks or any other method to reset the password from outside
the account; you will permanently lose access to your data. This feature
is not available in XP Home.
