XP Home Log on screen

R

Robert

I've had a hard disk failure and had it replaced. XP Home reinstalled and
everything OK - the logon screen did not appear and the computer booted up.
I installed .NET Framework 1.1 and 2 to allow some programmes to operate.
Now when I start my computer, I get the logon screen and have to click it to
continue the bootup. It also appears after the computer has been in
hibernation.

I'd like to get back to the previous state where it would boot up without
having to logon.

I found this fix for stopping the reappearance after hibernation
"Disabling prompt for password after Windows XP resumes from standby or
hibernation
1. Click Start, Settings, and Control Panel
2. Double-click Power Options
3. Uncheck the "Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby"
option.
4. Click Apply and then Ok."

But it does not work.

I also found Mark Salloway's instructions at
http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/welskip.php . I've tried to do that
using the password that SWIS gives me, but I get a message "The system could
not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain are correct, then type
your password again...."

How do I sort this out ? Help appreciated !

Robert.

You need to find out what password has been used to setup your account. Just
out of curiosity why did you install .NET 1.1 & 2, just .NET 2 would have
done it for you.
If you are using a login name then you should also be able to login as
administrator (which you have to do in safemode) and change the password for
the named account to whatever suits you. Then use "control userpasswords2".

Use Marks instruction and remove the checkmark after the screen opens (User
Accounts ) that say's***User must enter a user name and password to use computer***
Then hit Apply and close out. Reboot

Thanks !

I've tried that just now. When I hit "apply" I get the "Automatically
logon" screen. That shows the user name as "administrator" and asks for
the password. If I just close it and the previous screen down and reboot,
the logon screen appears as it boots.
If I fill in the "automatically logon" screen with the password that SWIS
gives me, when the computer reboots I get a message "The system could not
log you on. Make sure your user name and domain are correct, then type your
password again....". OK that, then login again as before.

I've tried using the password as SWIS gives it and also all in upper case -
makes no difference.

Any ideas ?

What exactly are you trying to achieve. If you do not want the logon screen at all
when booting then why are you trying to input a password. Help us understand

Did you create a user account for your personal use? You should *_NOT_*
be using the built-in Administrator account for daily use. If you did,
the use the "control userpasswords2" again and clear the check mark. In
the Auto login window that comes up replace the Administrator name with
the name of the user account you created for yourself. Then put in the
password if you password protected your account.

I haven't created an account - I'm just trying to get the computer to bootup
without going through the login process.

I don't want to put a password in - the screen demands one. If I don't put
one on, and just close it and the previous screen down, and then reboot, the
logon screen appears as it boots up again.

I just want the computer to boot up without the login screen appearing at
all.

Again

(1) Start\Run and type in control userpasswords2 and hit OK

(2) When the User Accounts dialogue box opens

(3) Then just REMOVE the checkmark from the following line in the box

(4) Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer

(5) Now hit Apply on the bottom of the dialogue box

(6) Close out

(7) Reboot

Thanks again.

This appears to be the stumbling block then "(4) Users must enter a user
name and password to use this computer"

What do I put in there ? Do I have to set up a user name and password or
just invent one at that screen and insert it ? As I said before, the only
password that SWIS gives is for the administrator and when I put that in, it
doesn't do the job.

Start | Run, type "control userpasswords2" Select the account you want
to logon to automatically. Then uncheck the box "Users must enter a
user name and password to use this computer."

Or do the same thing with TweakUI.

You need not do anything but the following ONLY.Just take out the checkmark from the
box so it is not selected. Then hit Apply and then reboot.

Robert

Thanks again.

I've just tried that. Took the checkmark out, hit apply and then rebooted
(without attempting to close the screens). The login screen appears as it
boots up.

A previous attempt when I took the checkmark out, closed the screens and
then rebooted did the same.
