I have a new computer with XP home. Two questions please. First, how do I
get it to log-on without having to stop and chose a user? (I am the only
user, there are no other choices). Also I do not want it to play any of the
Windows sound effects either on boot-up or shut down. How do I change this
option?

For the sound scheme

Open Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel
On the Sounds Tab, in the Program events list, Select None for start up and
shutdown sounds.

auto logon:-

.. Go to the Start Menu and the Run box.
.. Type in the following:
control userpasswords2
.. now click OK
.. In the new Windows that appears select the account you wish to make the
primary logon.
.. Now uncheck the "Users must enter a username and password..." box.
.. Hit Apply and a dialog box will appear asking you to confirm the selected
users password.

Click OK.
The changes will work the next time you restart your computer.
