Log on error

Hi all,
How can I remove all reference to previous user accounts. I deleted
one, choosing to remove all files and was still left with a folder bearing
the old name. After deleting it by hand I get the following error message
when logging on.

"Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the
default profile for the system.

DETAIL - The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the
registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format. "

I just want one user without having to start all over again.

Many thanks in advance.
