after clicking on the default icon or my name on log in, i typed my password;
below my password was the message: "Setting Personal Settings".

The problem: instead of displaying my desktop, I get a black screen with
only my mouse cursor visible after about 10 seconds.

HELP!

Your profile might be corrupted. Try logging on under
a different account.

Alternatively you could try logging on while in Safe Mode:
Press F8 early during the boot phase, then select Safe Mode
from the menu.

this didn't work -- help!

Your machine might be infected with a virus. Make sure
your important files are saved on a different medium, then
boot the machine with your WinXP CD and select Repair
when prompted.

If this does not work then you may have to re-install WinXP
over the top of your existing installation.
