No logon screen after return from powersaver/screen saver

Within the last 3 weeks my desktop system has been exhibiting random times
whereby no logon screen is displayed after moving he mouse to come out of
powersaver / screen saver mode. What happens is the system paints the
screen background (from black due to powersaver), but never paints the list
of valid users to allow anyone to log on. Instead, the cursor switches to
an hourglass, which I can move all about the screen. This remains until I
hard cycle power via holding the power button in for 10+ seconds.

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this problem?

Thier is an xp hotfix for hibernation/standby although not sure of specific
details,the fix #kb909095
