After clicking on the default icon or my name on log in;

I typed in my password;

Below my password was the message: "Setting Personal Settings".

After about 10 seconds,, instead of displaying my desktop, I get a black
screen with
only my mouse cursor visible.

HELP!

I had a similar problem sometime ago - I used the recovery console and ran
chkdsk /f which resolved the error.

If you google what you described you may find additional info.

Can you get into your account (or any other accounts) in Safe Mode? Do
this by repeatedly tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up.
This will get you to the right menu. Navigate using your Up arrow key;
the mouse will not work here.

Then it sounds like your user profile is damaged. Log into the
Administrator account (you will need to do this in Safe Mode if you
have XP Home) and create a new user account for yourself.

Then you can delete the old account.
