My cable connection is fine, I can go to various websites just fine, but any
website that requires me to log in, such as MSN browser, hotmail, yahoo, or
my university e-mail account, gives me an error page. This is on my desktop
PC. Furthermore, I cannot disable my wireless network or open up internet
options from my browser.

I did a system restore, that didn't solve it. I put everything to defaults
as well.

I'm running on Windows XP, and this happened after I installed some
microsoft updates, but I'm not really sure if this has anything to do with
it. Also, while attempting to install a game, I got a message saying a
WINDOWS file was missing that had to do with DirectX, which is preventing me
from installing DirectX 9.0c

Any ideas what this might be or how I can fix it?

Find the Warning and / or Error Report in Event Viewer and post a copy here.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, Event
Viewer.
HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Produc...

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.
