DirectX 9,0c

Long time ago, in the dark middle age... I have had installed XP prof. SP1 oem
with DirectX 9.0c. After upgraded to SP2 the xdiag shows me 9.0b, also some
games doesn't work (insists on 9.0c).
I have tried not a little - but a big million solutions to solve the
problem: DL all
possible instalations of DirectX 9, which usually had finished installation
in just
a few seconds (with information of success) - but the DirectX remains 9.0b.
Today I reinstalled Framework 1.1 (as suggested over forum), DL the latest DX.
The setup has run much longer and has copied (installed) a lot of new files.
It
looked fine until I checked xdiag - the DirectX is still 9.0b !! (the value
in the
register is always "00 00 00 09 00 00 00 00" (bin) and "4.09.00.0904" (sz).
Graphic card is ATI 9600 pro.
Pls help - thanks.

Yes, I know for this link. I tried both ways: direct validation and also manual validation (when I had to enter code) - it worked fine either way and I DL 'dxwebsetup.exe' (315.624 bytes). When I run this file the setup finish and I receive information "Installation Complete: The components installed are now ready for use." But when I run dxdiag it shows no change (there is no 9.0c - but 9.0b).

THAT is strange! Are you doing a Restart after you install it? Here's my
info from the System tab of dxdiag:
--------------------
....
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.60GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 510MB RAM
Page File: 482MB used, 1287MB available
Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS
====> DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.2180 32bit Unicode ...
-------------------

I'm far from a guru, but here's my best guess at the moment:

Do you make sure you Restart after the install?
I usually do 3 Restarts in order to trigger the registry optimization.
Do you see 9.0B in yours AFTER the restart?
Do you also have perhaps the 9,0b SDK?
Is there any chance that when you restart, your machine is going back and
automatically getting a "last known good" restore point?
Try creating a new restore point, call it DXDIAG or similar, then install
9.0c, Restart, and check to see whether the DXDIAG restore point is current
or has moved in the sequence.

Interesting; let us know.

Dear friend,

- Restart after install? YES
- dx9.0B after restart? YES
- Having & trying with 9.0b SDK? YES in dec.2006
- Automatically going to "last known good" point? NO

I'm also not considering me as a guru, although I do make my living money as
computers outsourced provider. Because of my work needs I do a lot of tests
and prg. installations on my PC. To restore the system after finished tests I
use the previously made images. But - and there is always some but - I do not
make a new image every time (system works fine, not enough time (stupid me),
urgent new job etc.). So, I believe there has been coming to some "confusion"
inside the system. Obviously renewing system over reinstallation (Setup with
Repair) doesn't resolve all the problems.
Nevertheless I have succeeded in installation dx9.0C :
- everything must be done in SAFE MODE !!
1. I have extracked & expanded the original DX files from the installation CD
2. Registered *.ax and *.sys files
3. Run DX Setup (dxwebsetup.exe) -> DX 9.0c = OK
The steps 1 & 2 done by batch file DX9 Uninstaller ("UnDx9.bat")

I haven't given attention to DxDiag version before, assuming that "comes
together" with all the other DX relevant files - this is probably also my
mistake, as I found that various DxDiag.exe's returns different results.

Hope to be usefull to other users.
Thanks & regards
Marjan
