lockups after bios update

Hi everyone, I have an asus A7V600 board and have just
updated the bios from 1007 beta 005 to 1008 without
problems. Now after successful rebooting and setting bios
to defaults mainly, I am getting frequent lockups and
can't even get to task manager to end programs. I have to
reboot to get back to windows. Have done chkdsk. Main
hardware is xp2800, 512 mb ddr ram (pc2100)Radeon 9600,
audigy 2 zs and maxtor 80gb. All drivers and updates are
current. Everything worked fine before. Should I download
an earlier bios and use that instead or could it be
something else?

Some BIOS Flash operations will reset or "Default" the values.
Did you note/write down the settings prior to the flash ?, Your
description sounds like memory timings or some other FSB
type of setting that is causing the system to be unstable.
However, usually a "Defaulting" causes system timings to be
more conservative, not more aggressive.
I would enter BIOS setup and check the summary page to
make sure your Processor is correctly identified and is running
at it's normal speed rating.

thanks for reply. My processor is correctly identified
and as you say default values, which they are except for
setting the display card to agp from pci and turning off
onboard sound. There is no system overclocking and all
fsb and memory are set to auto or default values
whichever applies. Maybe a memory upgrade is in order.

One thing that should ALWAYS be done after a BIOS flash is the "Clear
CMOS" step. If a "CMOS memory location" is reassigned during the flash
the data may be incorrect for proper BIOS operation. Please note there
is much CMOS information that is not presented in the setup screens.

Thanks for that tip.I had considered this step but
assumed everything previous would be cleared. So far so
good, no lockups yet and my cpu temps have dropped again
after rising after the flash. I will remember this for
the future if things carry on well for the system.

Fact: You didn't have problems until you updated the bios!
Fact: You didn't have problems until you went into the new bios and made
changes.

Fact: The problem is with the new bios you installed or the settings you
initiated!
