XP Lockup

I have been using XP for about 2 years and have SP2 installed and running OK.
Last summer after a hardware change I have had unexpected OS lockups. No
errors get reported as I must do a reboot to get going again. I do notice an
interaction between sound and IE when scrolling on a web page. Any ideas how
to approach a solution?

Normally, when lockups occur we:

1) Check the temperature sensors so as to see if the system is over-heating.
Add additional fans, or cooling parts, as needed
2) Check the power supply output wattage. 350 WATTS seems to be a standard
nowadays.
3) Check for viruses
4) Check for spywares/malwares/hackwares.
5) Check and update all/any drivers. Make sure you check and update/install
the motherboard chipset drivers.

If the system still has lockups then:

6) Try to more the power connection to a different power circuit. Bad,
dirty power can cause lockups.

Thanks for the quick response. I do check for adware and spyware frequently,
have a monitor program for CPU temp and protection, etc., drivers are
up-to-date so I don't know what else to try. I think the dirty connector
suggestion might be good as I had a funny sound problem (intermittent) that
seems to have stopped after slightly rocking the sound chipset. I know they
are fragile. I will ensure all monitoring is operating before trying anything
else.

FYI, I use 430 watts for my PC.

The PC was "new" as of July 2004 with not much added except a SCSI interface
in a PCI slot so power should not be a problem. What is frustrating is that
no errors are logged for analysis. It just stops, nothing common, and must do
hard restart. Seemed to have a connection to sound as scrolling in an IE
window affects sound from any source. Not so with alternative browser.
Failure happens at any time, with or without IE.

It sounds like a hardware, problem. I am adding 98 newsgroup so the experts
there can help.
