Bob

I have recently started to have system lockups if I right-
click on my desktop or Start toolbar. I do not get
lockups if I right-click in an application. The problem
can be duplicated every time. I've tried a different PS2
mouse. I've also switch button settings. The lockup is
consistent on the 'right' button even if I've changed the
physical placement to the left button of the mouse.

Since a full restart is required, any help will be
GREATLY appreciated.

ALL Windows XP updates, including drivers, have been
installed.

Thanks.

Bob, at this point, just start a new thread, incorprating and emphasizing
Mike's point. His reply was brief, but it may help some. I have found that
any negativity or impatience in a post invariably cuts back on both the
volume and timeliness of responses to an inquiry. Many experts simply delete
posts they dislike the moment they see them. In fact, even nonexperts like
me do this.

Does it do it on every file type, or only certain ones? That may help narrow
down the culprit.

Mike,

It locks on all types of files and objects, including folders. It also locks
on the toolbar if I right-click a Quick Launch icon.

This problem started after I did an update after a long period of neglect.
The recommended critical and other updates totaled more than 20.

Thanks.

You could do a System Restore, if you get desperate enough. Then you would
have to repeat the update process, testing after each update. Good luck.

Can you tell me more about "System Restore". Does it wipe out all other app
installs (settings). What does it restore to (original install)? Since the
computer came with XP installed, will I have to find the XP install disks?
Is there a Knowledge Base article that will step me through the issues?

Thanks.

System Restore should not be confused with "Restoring the operating system,"
which is a drastic step.
Type System Restore" into Help and Support, and choose Run the System
Restore Wizard. On the left pane, there is an explanation. It's easy and
reversible.
Downside: all your program files are reverted to a past state. Any
downloads, etc. which occurred after the restore point will have to be put
back again. (Not your data or settings, though.)
