Locking up

We had a problem with our laptop locking up both when using it and when it had been idle for a while. We took it in and the tech restored it back to factory settings. After getting it back we had no problems until after I had installed the recommended window updates and hotfixes. Now it is doing the same thing again. It locks up and we have to hard boot it. We don't know if we lose any data during re-boot because we haven't been in the middle of a document or anything when its locked up. Anybody know what I can do to fix this?
Thanks
Tom

Yes, the latest update KB832483 can do this. At least one report in the
windowsupdate newsgroup and another two possible reports here on 18th ("Re:
Freezing" from Josh and "Outlook Express problem" from Kasas City Milkman).
Here is the Google News Archive of messages to that newsgroup with a mention
of KB832483.

I think for correction the consensus is to roll back using a System Restore
Point, since it cannot be uninstalled.

I was lucky; my update went through without any event.

Bee.
